Afghan Turkmen Tribal Head Dress - Ceremonial Tribal Jewellery Qobbah
Like most Turkman Tribal Jewelry, this amazing ceremonial headdress is worn with pride to designate status and position on important occasions. Young women put on these "caps" (Qobbah; Gupbo; Quppa) around the time of their marriage. Not surprisingly these headpieces are rich with tribal jewelry symbolism and ritual significance. The elaborate and distinctive inverted cup-shaped ornament attached to the top is immediately identifiable as classically Turkmen Tribal in its origin.
For example, the cowry shells represent the romantic side of the feminine and the promise of fertility. The red color of the embroidered fabric back portion strengthens the life spirit that flows through the body, while the forehead dangles represent falling rain water ...water in Turkmen and other Tribal Societies almost always symbolizes the highest form of the feminine as it supports life for all things. This Turkmen Tribal Headdress is unusual in that is has a copious number of colorful tassels attached to the back fabric and hanging from each side. Tassels also mimic the look of falling water, and are considered exquisitely femine. The side tassels act like tenechir, or hanging pendants that swing freely and dramatically when the head is moved. The rectangular decorations (shitaq) attached in rows along the cap are found in many kinds of personal adornment from this region. They are often sewn onto fabric for both men and women, and symbolize prosperity for the wearer and family members. The hanging round bells clatter and jangle with movement - besides being visually beautiful, Turkmen Tribal Jewelry embraces sound as an important design element.
The ornate decorations of Turkmen Tribal Headpieces are hand-sewn to a padded cloth cap underneath for cushioning. Turkmen women wear the Qubba directly over the hair, or may wear an additional cap or veil piece beneath the headdress for comfort, securing it, or perfecting the fit.
