Antique Turkmen Tribal Jewelry Pair of Large Clasp Pendants
These exceptional large pendants are known as Lozenges, Doonbajiks, and Diadems. Traditionally they were worn by Turkmen Tribal women used them as giant clasps attached to their clothing close to the for holding their clothing together. One of the pendants on this wonderful matching pair does indeed have an almost imperceptible wire hook on one end tip for attaching to the ajacent pendant for making a clasp closure. They could also be sown onto the lower portions of waist-length bilateral fabric panels worn on the front of the body. By custom, when the entire pair is not available, the one remaining pendant is worn as a necklace, thread on a chain or cord. Fortunately, the pair of these gorgeous and sturdy antique doonbajik pendants is entirely intact...a Collectors dream. Handcrafted early to mid 1900's, with exquisite fretted and gilded metalwork. Lower rim of beading near dangle tips recently restrung. All eye beads are intact including the center blue beads, which are very unusual for jewelry from this period. Doonbajiks were considered part of women's personal wealth, and were often made to specification and treasured as hers alone.
Patina from age on backs of both pendants. Collectible Museum Quality. Price is for the pair (Sorry, we cannot separate them!).
