Unique Hornbill Pendant and Red Coral Tribal Necklace
The natives of Northern Luzon were known to be ferocious hunters who developed their own favorite form of large earrings (lingling-o) and pendants to distinguish themselves. This unique pendant has sacred hornbill heads flanking each side...double-headed pendants/earrings such as these are called pinangpanga. They were worn by the men of the tribe and empowered before wearing through ritual to protect and strengthen the wearer. Pendant/earrings like these have been found in this region dating back 2500 years.
This earring/pendant style is shown on page 174, Ethnic Jewelry, by Michel Butor as an example of classic Ifugao Tribal Jewelry. Some say that the center opening is shaped like an infant with its embilical cord still attached, symbolizing fertility and a connection to the spiritual world.
