They were orignally handcrafted by local tribal artisans in the 1800's  in Northern Africa (Mauritania). The colors and bead patterns of each bead and their juxtaposition to each other are intensely symbolic as  artisan spelled out hidden messages in tribal  "color" code for protecting the wearer.
