This large 3-dimensional Antique Tumar Pendant Necklace is one-of-a-kind classic Turkmen Tekke Tribal Jewellery. Tumar are traditionally worn by Turkmen women who drape them on a strap around the neck where they hang down dramatically to the waist. The horizontal bead-encrusted tubular portion is actually a hollow chamber called a Tumar, which gives this necklace its name. This chamber opens on one end for inserting sacred verses, wishes, or even whispered secrets, where they are said to ripen into fruition.

 

In typical Turkmen style, mutliple red-glass beads in raised bezels cover the surface of this piece. The color Red is believed to hold the essence of the life spirit that courses through our veins.  People clad with red stones in their jewelry are thought to be invigorated and strengthened against all adversities that come their way. The surface of the piece is gilded with gold wash which outlines the intriquing traditional designs etched in the silver metal below. 

 

The visual beauty and clattering sound of the large bell-dangles adds excitement and exuberance to this piece, while dispelling any evil spirits within earshot. Antique embossed medallions on both straps are equally impressive for their age and traditional detail (Strap fabric is new).
